    Services Offered Coolant Application Optimization:
Using well-proven fluid dynamic principles, coolant optimization offers the greatest "bang for the buck" in grinding. Users often spend hundreds of thousand of dollars on machine tools, thousands of dollars on grinding wheels and dressing systems, and then use either flexible plastic or crushed pipe nozzles to shoot the coolant. Experience has shown that the coolant delivery can be as important as the rest of the grinding system with regards quality, productivity and economics. At UConn, Webster developed a range of low-dispersion coolant nozzles, based on fire-hose technology, that really puts the fire out in grinding!

Webster designs, builds and applies both round and rectangular nozzles in a range of grinding applications, using a proven philosophy for determining the flowrate, pressure, aperture, and placement relative to the grinding zone. These 'precision' devices are known in the field for their low dispersion, laser-like, jet quality. During the last 6 years these nozzles have been used by several UK and German universities investigating high removal rate grinding regimes, as well as in gas turbine, cutting tool, bearing, automotive, electronic and robotic grinding applications.

The low entrainment of air and minimum dispersion associated with Doctor Coolant nozzles offer strategic advantages over most nozzle designs, such as:

    • reduced burn tendency
    • less wheel dressing
    • increased removal rate
    • reduced flowrate
    • reduced pumping energy
    • more precise aiming
    • effective air-barrier elimination
    • reduced mist and foam

All nozzles use standard NTP, flare or solder fittings. Mounting brackets can also be supplied to fit all machines. Wheel wear compensation is also considered, in order to maintain jet position at all times.

In addition to supplying coolant nozzles, Webster will audit your current set-up, establish the limitations that exist, and guide you towards the best nozzle solution, flow conditions and placement.

    Grinding Process Diagnostics:
With almost 30 years of theoretical and practical grinding experience, Webster can help you to troubleshoot your current application and guide you to a better process. His services include:

    • chatter detection and reduction
    • coolant optimization
    • fluid, filtration and pumps
    • machine/fixture stiffness issues
    • shorter cycle times
    • dressing/truing optimization
    • centerless set-up
    • sensor integration
    • new material grinding setup
    • grinding burn reduction

Using data acquisition and quantitative techniques, Webster can audit your current process and recommend changes that will move you to the next level.
